In 2015, RIGHTS launched the inaugural RIGHTS-STANFORD CDDRL ASEAN OSCE Conference in Kuala Lumpur. This was a joint initiative between RIGHTS and Stanford’s prestigious Centre for Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law. The conference brought together key figures from ASEAN and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), to reflect on how the two multilateral institutions may come together to promote the peace and well-being of the interna- tional community based on mutual respect, cooperation and dialogue.
Through this conference, members of the ASEAN and OSCE community were able to share their unique experiences of addressing security challenges, especially non-traditional threats. This platform allowed participants from both parties to learn from each other about how to develop confidence and security building measures and preventive diplomacy to promote regional peace and security.
This event featured opening addresses from Mr. Yusmadi Yusoff, Chairman of the RIGHTS Foundation, Professor Dr. Makarim Wibisono, the former Executive Director of the ASEAN Foundation, and Mr. Jovan Jovanovic, the Advisor to the OSCE Chairman, followed by a panel session led by a number of distinguished local and international speakers reflecting on the lessons learned during the course of the year’s Chairmanship.
